Groundbreaking for $120 million expansion of Cambrex in Charles City

A company that produces ingredients for prescription medications is making a $120 million expansion of its facility in Charles City. Claudio Russolo, the Chief Executive Officer of Cambrex, said the expansion will increase the plant’s production of “Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients” by 25%, “making this site, here in Iowa, the largest independent API manufacturing site in the whole country.”

Pine Lake Corn Processors seeks increase in water permit

Pine Lake Corn Processors near Steamboat Rock is seeking state approval to increase the amount of water it is authorized to withdraw for ethanol production. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reviewing a request to raise the company’s annual withdrawal limit from 320 million gallons to 345 million gallons — an increase of 25 million gallons a year.

Lindale Mall parent company names new CEO amid turmoil

CEDAR RAPIDS — After corporate and legal turmoil, Lindale Mall’s owner has a new CEO who is pledging to boost performance across the company’s commercial real estate portfolio. Ran Daniel took over in September as chief executive officer and chief financial officer for Kohan Properties Ltd. The move followed the ouster of company namesake Mike Kohan after what The Real Deal, a real estate publication, described as “allegations of secret loans” and “bond misuse.” Kohan Retail Investment Group bought the 732,666-square-foot Lindale Mall for $28.5 million in March 2023 . At the time, The Gazette detailed some of the previous controversies surrounding Kohan. For instance, in May 2023, a mall in Hamburg, New York , was sold for over $7 million in an online auction, according to WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, New York. Kohan had bought the property in foreclosure for $8.5 million in 2021. He owed $176,069 in overdue taxes on the property for 2022. Kohan owed $355,434 in unpaid base taxes in January 2023 and accrued $30,157 in penalties for another property, Central Mall in Port Arthur, Texas, but those taxes were paid in April, according to the Jefferson County Tax Office. Time Machine: The huge gas storage tower in C.R.

I don’t remember what I was researching when I came across a Gazette photo of a “gas storage holder.” It was huge, and had been located at First Street and Ninth Avenue SE. I thought it seemed a little dangerous to have a structure holding that much natural gas so close to downtown Cedar Rapids. The exceptionally large structure was “dodecagonal,” meaning it was 12-sided. The grainy photo was intriguing, so I clipped it and stored it for future research. The tower is today’s Time Machine column. I called The History Center, looking for a clearer photo of the tower and maybe a little more information and came up empty. Of course, The Gazette, repository of Eastern Iowa history, rarely fails me. The back story In May 1925, the Cedar Rapids Gas Co., a subsidiary of the United Light and Power Co., took out a quarter-page ad in The Gazette congratulating the newspaper on its “splendid new building” on Third Avenue and Fifth Street SE. The ad also announced the gas company’s construction plans. “We find it necessary to expand our facilities from year to year. More mains, services, meters and works equipment are required each year,” the ad read.
