Xerox to shut down some manufacturing operations in Webster

Xerox has revealed plans to end print engine manufacturing operations at its Webster campus by June 30.

According to a press release, the company has announced its intention to discontinue manufacturing the Xerox iGen 5 Press and the Xerox Nuvera Presses. Both are considered legacy platforms that played pivotal roles in shaping the Production Print industry.

"Xerox is putting a greater focus on our innovative technology in workflow automation," the statement reads. "To support this focus, Xerox's production portfolio continues evolving to best suit our clients' needs."

The local cuts come after the company's first-quarter results show a 12.4 percent decrease in revenue.

"This quarter, Xerox orchestrated one of its most intense periods of structural change in recent history, continuing the hard work required to reposition our business for long-term, sustainable growth," CEO Steve Bandrowczak said in a press release. "While results were below our expectations in Q1, I have full confidence we have the right team and the right strategy to execute Xerox's Reinvention and deliver on our adjusted operating income targets."

According to the Rochester Business Journal, Xerox's local workforce has decreased to nearly 1,500. At the close of 2023, the company had reported 1,754 local employees.

Gary Bonadonna Jr., union leader of the Rochester Regional Joint Board, Workers United released the following statement:

It is tragic news that these manufacturing jobs in Webster have reached end of production. Our union members of Local 14A have been proud to manufacture the Production Print Engine Systems for many years. Sad to say that the decreased investment in research and development in Webster has contributed to these end-of-life products. Our union contract softens the blow, providing severance to workers who voluntarily leave, and provides supplemental income to workers in the event of involuntary layoff. Those workers on involuntary layoff are eligible for recall for a period of two (2) years as well. But the impact on our members, whether it’s voluntarily or involuntarily, is simply heartbreaking.
