Western’s Macabre Musical
Magic potions, starry umbrellas, electric shock, a trip to the moon, and shooting an apple off a loved one’s head with a crossbow all combined for a hilarious, zany evening at the Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) Theater Ensemble’s performance of The Addams Family on the last weekend in April. “The Addams Family holds a special place in my heart,” Director Caitlin Pitts remarked in her program note, “because it is the musical we were working on the year the pandemic hit, and we had to cancel all of our shows the day before we opened.” With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, based on Charles Addams’ cartoon characters which appeared in The New Yorker from 1938 until his death in 1988, The Addams Family musical opened on Broadway in 2010, where it won several awards. The exuberant WAHS production featured direction by Pitts, assistant direction by Mary Kate Camblos, orchestral direction by Elizabeth Vaughn, vocal direction by Abby Smith, and audio engineering by Kenton Showers.
