Bojangles is coming to Waynesboro and it's bringing some upgrades.

The project to build the 2,900-square-foot sit-down and drive-thru restaurant is accepting construction bids through May 15.

The new Bojangles is planned for 300 Virginia Pkwy., with competitor Zaxby's next-door, near the intersection of North Liberty Street and Burke Veterans Parkway. It will join the cluster of restaurants, hotels and other businesses in and around the Hopkins Corner commercial plaza on the city's north side.

With more than 800 locations nationwide, including more than 100 in Georgia, the popular fast-food restaurant featuring spicy chicken and made-from-scratch biscuits launched an expansion campaign in 2021.

Plans for the Waynesboro Bojangles describe the location as a "prototype." That hints at constructing what the company described as a "Genesis building prototype, featuring an ergonomic design with digital menu boards, dual drive-thru lanes and a new staffing model, all aimed at simplifying operations, reducing complexities in the kitchen, and enhancing the overall guest experience," the company said in January.

There is no immediate timetable for the restaurant's construction.
