Manatee County voters expand popular land conservation program with referendum

Voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that would allow Manatee County officials to buy and protect more land from development. The ballot measure asked residents whether they supported paying slightly higher property taxes to help fund conservation that protects water quality, preserves natural lands and prevents overdevelopment. The referendum passed with nearly 76% of the vote. The Election Day result follows a similar referendum that Manatee voters also approved by a wide margin in 2020. Tuesday’s referendum allows commissioners to spend up to $75 million in bonds to buy land. Over the past six years, the Manatee County Commission has used the environmental lands fund to purchases over 1,000 acres of new and expanded parks. In October, commissioners approved two more purchases that protected over 700 acres of land in Myakka City and Parrish. “We’re preserving hundreds of acres of important habitat, protecting our waterways and creating opportunities for residents to explore and appreciate these lands for generations to come,” Commissioner Tal Siddique said in a statement at the time. In May, the Trust for Public Land, which helped launch the 2020 land preservation referendum, conducted a poll that found widespread public support for Tuesday’s ballot measure. State grant provides drones for Polk State agricultural program

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a grant of $276,069 to Polk State College for agricultural education during a news conference on Nov. 4. The award of Workforce Capitalization Grant funding from the Florida Department of Education will expand dual enrollment opportunities for high school students to gain hands-on experience in agricultural technology, including the use of drones and other emerging technologies, Polk State said in a news release. DeSantis made the announcement during a visit to Polk State’s JD Alexander Center in Lake Wales. The state funding will help Polk State acquire several unmanned aircraft systems to be used in agricultural programs through the college’s AgriPolk initiative. Students will be able to receive certifications related to drone technology. “So, this is going to be value-added, and Polk State's really going to be leading the charge on it,” DeSantis said during a news conference. “And it's a great part of the state to have this. And I'm really excited that we're able to get that done.” In October 2025, Polk State launched AgriPolk , an initiative that combines the associate in arts degree with specialized coursework, hands-on learning and certification opportunities for students interested in agriculture, the news release said. High turnout propels Democratic upset, two close calls in Polk County

Polk County remains reliably Republican, but the county’s shade of red paled a bit in the midterm elections. Most notably, Octavio Hernandez, a Democrat, unseated Republican incumbent Rep. Hilary Holley in the Florida House District 51 election. That means that a Democrat will hold a Polk County seat in the Florida Legislature for the first time since Darren Soto in 2016. Four other Republican incumbents in the Florida Legislature won their races, though in each case the margin of victory was smaller than in their previous election. Two Republicans, Sen. Colleen Burton of Lakeland and Rep. Jon Albert of Frostproof, survived close elections. Democrats voted at a slightly higher rate than Republicans in Polk County, where the GOP has an advantage of nearly 58,000 in voter registration. Among registered Democrats, 63.1% of eligible voters cast ballots, compared with 59.8% of Republicans, according to figures from the Polk Supervisor of Elections Office. For voters with no party affiliation, the turnout rate was 43.2%, while 38.9% of those registered with other parties voted.
