West Nile virus case prompts mosquito spraying in Anderson County

Anderson County will spray for mosquitoes near Iva next week after a confirmed case of West Nile virus was reported in the area. Anderson County Emergency Management said it will coordinate with Gregory Pest Solutions to spray for mosquitoes within a one-mile radius of Barnes Station Road and Manning Road in Iva as a precautionary measure following the confirmed case. Weather permitting, the spraying is scheduled for late Friday evening, Nov. 13. The announcement comes as South Carolina health officials have continued to monitor West Nile virus activity across the state. Earlier this year, health officials reported multiple human cases and mosquito-borne outbreaks of the virus, marking another active season for the disease in South Carolina. Precautionary spraying planned in Iva area According to county officials, the spraying will target mosquitoes in the vicinity of Barnes Station Road and Manning Road, where the confirmed case was identified. The operation is intended to reduce the local mosquito population and limit the potential spread of the virus. Officials said the water-based pesticide used during spraying does not pose a health risk to people or animals. Pickens County pumps brakes on data center development

Pickens County Council unanimously approved the first reading of a proposed six-month moratorium on new data center development Nov. 2, giving county officials time to study how the rapidly growing industry could affect the county and what regulations may be needed before projects move forward. The ordinance, identified as No. 694, would temporarily pause data center development while county leaders evaluate zoning, infrastructure and land-use considerations related to the facilities. The proposal advanced by unanimous vote, with all council members present voting in favor of a first reading. The main topic of the first reading was the county council's desire to make Pickens County a safe area from the environmental risks posed by a data center. "I see it more as giving people peace of mind," Council Chair Alex Saitta said. "I don't support them, I'm not going to vote for one, and I wouldn't imagine the majority up here won't." The vote comes weeks after county officials publicly acknowledged that a real estate agent put in an inquiry to the county to gauge its interest in hosting a data center. HENDERSON COUNTY - A powerful legislative insider faced a former presidential pilot who wanted to shake up Raleigh. Republican state Rep. Jake Johnson and Democrat John Morgan competed for North Carolina House District 113, covering Polk County and portions of Henderson, McDowell and Rutherford counties, in a contest centered on affordability, education and government accountability. Johnson, a Saluda native, won election to the Polk County Board of Commissioners in 2016 before being appointed to the General Assembly in 2019. He entered the contest as House deputy majority whip, with leadership roles overseeing state government and information technology. Republicans sweep races for Spartanburg County Council

With ongoing community agitation over the issue of data center developments, it's a season of change for the Spartanburg County Council . The Republican Party, however, will maintain its grip on local political offices. There will be a new council chair, Republican William Crawford , and three new district representatives -- GOP nominees Jason Seay, Betty Montgomery and Alex Turner. In the GOP primary for District 2, Seay defeated incumbent Jack Mabry, and Turner ousted Jessica Coker in District 6. Montgomery won the District 5 Republican primary to replace Bob Walker, who did not seek another term. Signs of sweeping change on county council were suggested by the March announcement by current chair Manning Lynch that he would not seek a third term. He cited the controversy surrounding Project Spero, the code name for a tax incentive package for a data center project that was initially green-lighted but ultimately rejected by council. Crawford, a small-business owner who lost a 2018 race to represent District 2, defeated political newcomer Mike Stacy in a GOP runoff .
