LETTER: Vote ‘yes’ but ask to keep World Language program
I am writing in support of the Elementary World Language Program in the Harwood Unified Union School District. I don’t live in the HUUSD, so I am not able to vote on the upcoming budget, but I have worked in this community for 8 years. As someone who works...
Weathervane stolen 40 years ago from White River Junction train depot recovered
This story was originally produced by the Valley News. NHPR is republishing it in partnership with the Granite State News Collaborative. The theft was worthy of a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery: In the dark, early morning hours on a calm November morning in 1983 a pair of agile thieves used ladders and ropes to ascend the rooftop of the train depot in White River Junction and steal its historic weathervane.
Area orchards look to rebound from killing frost of ‘23
WILLISTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Fruit growers around the region are looking for a rebound this summer following the hard frost that wiped out their crops exactly one year ago. The killing frost May 17-18 destroyed fruit blossoms and damaged vines throughout the state, eventually earning a disaster designation by the USDA. Some fruit growers in the Upper Valley told WCAX News they expected to lose 95% of their crops.
LETTER: Budget uncertainty could spark ‘an exodus of qualified early and mid-career teachers’
My name is Larry Gravelle and I’m a 20-year veteran high school English teacher who is just finishing his first year at Harwood Union High School. I live in Moretown with my wife, who is a math and science teacher at HUHS, and we’re raising our eight-year-old son in this incredible community- a community that drew us from Colorado due in part to its wonderful elementary school, small class sizes (it matters!) and overall support for public education. We are homeowners facing the same tax increases as our friends and neighbors. I am writing this letter to urge those in our community who are on the fence to vote yes on this current budget. If our community fails to pass this budget, we face losing many more student-facing positions and could, I fear, jeopardize the sustainability of our district.
Super Senior: Mary Wells
MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Mary Wells savors the many seasons on her land in Berlin. “Probably spring, all of... No, I summer and fall and winter sometimes,” she said. Wells grew up just down the hill. A tomboy of sorts, she took up a course in drafting in high school. “I like to do things that other girls hadn’t done,” she said.
Rightsizing our schools: Former board members suggest a path forward for the Harwood district
May 17, 2024 | By Scott Mackey, David Goodman, Alexandra Thomsen, Laura Caffry, Rosemarie White and Dale Smeltzer. The voters have now rejected the Harwood Unified Union School District budget twice, rejecting both the original budget and a slightly lower second proposal that made cuts in one-time expenditures but failed to address the long-term structural spending problem that faces our district.
