Officer James Mullin of the New Brunswick neighborhood police team saved the life of a choking baby, Eileen Melgar, it was reported on Friday, May 7, 1999. The rescue of the baby, who had no pulse, took place on Tuesday, May 4, 1999. Mullin gave the baby CPR; cleared the baby's airway, which was blocked by a combination of infant formula and mucus, then continued CPR. The baby then began to breathe.

EAST BRUNSWICK/SOUTH RIVER, NJ - On Thursday, May 2, a home on 8 Continental Court, South River a two and a half story house exploded and was leveled, seemingly collapsing in on itself. In the home at the time were Kevin Gilbert and his brother-in-law Curtis. Curtis was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment. The other victim, Gilbert, 62, was discovered with fatal injuries.
