WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Thousands of people in D.C. are now cooling off thanks to air conditioning being turned back on this week.

In the meantime, many Maryland and Virginia residents won’t have access to cooler air indoors for another week and a half.

Debate continues on whether landlords should offer air conditioning sooner with warmer days beginning earlier in the year — state, and municipal laws stipulate how long heat can be offered during colder months, and many older buildings can only accommodate heat or AC at once.

Some Washingtonians told DC News Now their units neared 90 degrees inside Monday as outdoor temperatures sweltered.

D.C. Landlords are required by law to offer heat until May 1, but in Virginia , they are required to provide this until May 15.

Maryland does not have a state law stipulating this, however municipalities can set when landlords no longer have to offer heat.

Prince George’s County tenants , for example, can start receiving AC May 15, while Montgomery County tenants might not see it until June 1.

To fight the indoor heat, consumers can visit a local hardware store to find small AC units and fans. Utilize today’s tech to price-check elsewhere. Google’s ‘Lens’ feature can find the same or similar products on other websites for less, and browser extensions can price-check for you.

Calling your utility provider and asking about discounts may offer some relief–programs are likely based on income and disability requirements.

Weatherization programs can also bring along discounts.
