Ask the eye doctor: Answers to audience questions
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Dr. William Benevento with Eye Surgeons Associates provides answers to some audience questions. The short answer is not much for my part of the exam. I do the same things I did 30 years ago. The long answer is that we have a lot more tools to help folks, and those tools are leading to better outcomes. I’ll use glaucoma as an example. It used to be that anyone with a pressure over 21 or a funny looking nerve would end up on drops for the rest of their lives. Full stop. We just didn’t have the tools to give us an early warning sign that someone was getting worse. We now have a machine that uses a laser to scan around the nerve, looking at the thickness of the nerve fiber layer. If that layer starts to thin at all, we can catch it way before anyone would notice it in real life. A lot of folks haven’t started medications, and we’ve even taken some folks off medications, because we can better sniff out who needs them and who doesn’t. The testing makes the difference.
