PHOTOS: Main Line home once owned by family that inspired 'The Philadelphia Story' could be yours — for $13.5M

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Part of the sprawling Main Line estate that inspired the movie "The Philadelphia Story" is on the market.

The asking price? $13.5 million.

Sitting behind the Academy of Notre Dame De Namur in Villanova and across the street from Overbrook Golf Club is a nearly 17-acre property with buildings that date back to 1913.

Listing Agent Lisa Yakulis with Kurfiss Sotheby's International Realty says the property is the southern rim of an 800-acre piece of land that was once owned by Lt. Col. Robert Montgomery, whose family inspired “The Philadelphia Story,” starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart.

“Hepburn played the part of Hope Montgomery Scott, who was his daughter,” Yakulis said. “Hope Montgomery Scott was a renowned equestrian in this area.”

Yakulis says the property was renovated from 2003 to 2006. Owners added a speaker system and a wine cellar and fixed a clock tower on site. She says there has been some good and serious interest in the property since it hit the market.
