Brush fire burning in rural community near Lancaster

Los Angeles County firefighters battled a brush fire that broke out in the rural community of Fairmont in the Antelope Valley Wednesday. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — Forecasters are watching for back-to-back storm systems aimed at California as the overall weather pattern is expected to shift significantly toward mid-November. Multiple powerful storms could arrive one after another, bringing periods of heavy rainfall, especially if atmospheric rivers become involved, which looks increasingly possible. Northern and Central California, including San Francisco and Sacramento, appear to be first in line. Southern California and nearby regions, including Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, could follow as the pattern evolves. The European model forecast for 10 p.m. PST Wednesday, November 11, shows a powerful jet stream stretching across the entire North Pacific Ocean straight into the California coast.

Santa Monica Declares Emergency Ahead of Potentially Historic El Niño

SANTA MONICA - Santa Monica has declared a local emergency ahead of winter, giving officials greater flexibility to buy storm supplies as forecasters warn El Niño could become the strongest recorded since 1950. The council adopted the declaration Oct. 27 as part of preparations for the 2026-27 winter season. Along the coast, city officials are preparing for beach erosion and unstable bluffs that could send mud and debris onto Pacific Coast Highway. Heavy rain could also overwhelm drainage systems and cause flooding.The city's preparations include cleaning more than 600 catch basins and building protective sand berms along the beach and storm drain outflows. Crews are also checking roofs and gutters at public facilities.For people experiencing homelessness, the winter response will temporarily ease shelter eligibility requirements during storms, allowing first responders and outreach teams to refer people indoors.Santa Monica's declaration follows state and Los Angeles County emergency actions in September . Venice Braces Its Beaches and Canals For El Niño Impact

VENICE - With a historic El Niño already taking shape, Venice is undergoing a series of upgrades and repairs to help protect the coastal area from incoming harsh weather and flood risks. Work has begun to help prepare the coastal area for record-breaking water levels and flooding risks, with improvements underway in vulnerable areas including the Venice Pier and tree-lined roadways. The preparation has included clearing out storm drains, trimming more than 100 trees, and renewing infrastructure in flooding-prone areas like the Venice canals. Large waves associated with the storm have already caused coastal LA's sea levels to reach 1.3 feet above average , breaking previous records for maximum sea levels. Warmer water temperatures cause the increase in sea levels, and with LA continuing to see hotter water temperatures than normal, the levels may only continue to rise. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate period categorized by increased storms and rain due to warm ocean temperatures. The strong storms bring risk of debris flows, rising sea levels, and localized floods because of the rain - during LA's past El Niño winters, some of the county saw its rainfall more than double. Southern California will warm up Thursday as Santa Ana winds begin to build, with stronger gusts and elevated fire danger forecast for Friday and Saturday.
