(KRON) — Officers arrested an alleged murderer in connection to a shooting that occurred on Monday, the Vallejo Police Department said.

Police received calls of a shooting at about 7:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Camino Alto.

Upon arriving, witnesses told police the victim was shot and taken to a local hospital by his immediate family, police said.

Officers were informed that the victim was suffering from “at least” one gunshot wound, police said. Despite efforts made by medical personnel, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

VPD patrol officers later found a car matching the description of the suspect’s car “traveling at a high rate of speed.” The driver refused to yield, initiating a pursuit.

Police said the pursuit ended when the suspect’s car stopped working after a severe traffic collision.

During the pursuit, the suspect threw away a firearm from his car that was later found near the collision, police said.

VPD’s detective division later took over the investigation and identified the suspect as 38-year-old Clifton Chandler Jr. from Vallejo. Chandler Jr. was also driving with a woman who remains unidentified.

Clifton Chandler Jr. was arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail for murder. He was later charged with murder on Tuesday, police said.
