URBANA, Mo. – Authorities say a string of ATM thefts in Missouri over the weekend may all be connected.

“We think this is an organized crime group out of Texas and they’re going across the state of Missouri and hitting all these ATMs,” Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd said.

Sheriff Danny Boyd said there were five counties hit by ATM thieves this past weekend: Andrew, Barry, Camden, Dallas, and Phelps counties. On Saturday Morning, Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd said the group broke into an ATM at the Freedom Bank in Golden using a stolen church van.

“When [deputies] got down there, they noticed that the ATM had been busted open and the part that holds the money was missing,” Sheriff Danny Boyd said. “From what we’re told, there was a stolen church van they located about a half a mile up the road in the ditch that was still running. Then, they used a pickup that they stole from another location.”

The Dallas County Sheriff’s office posted Monday the thieves stole a truck from a resident in Preston to pry open the OakStar ATM off Highway 65 in Urbana.

“They know that if they do a crime a certain way, they know which authorities will be the one that’s going to be investigating it, which does make a big difference,” Boyd said. “The ones in Missouri, we’ll probably all get together to file charges and work with the authorities in Texas to try to get these people out of apprehended.”

Boyd said because the group is out of state, it could take longer to find and arrest them.

“It is nice that we know it’s not some locals that did this,” Boyd said. “We have been working with the other counties. They do have some footage that we’re trying to get from them, see if it matches up with what we have.”

Boyd said the thieves could face property damage and stealing charges in every county they went to.
