URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s migrating season, and more than a million birds will be flying through Central Illinois.

Experts say they’re leaving Central and South America and heading towards Canada. Several different species may stop in your backyard for food and rest.

Michael Ward is a University of Illinois Natural Resources and Environmental Science Professor who studies birds. He says it’s hard for them to stay healthy and safe during migration.

“People feed birds, which can be helpful. But I think the really [good] thing that you can do is plant native plants that support insects and support fruit that the birds can eat,” Ward said. “Have areas they are safe, right, so have bushes and trees. We know that oak trees are extremely important for migratory birds because they support a lot of caterpillars, and those birds need those oak trees.”

He said Busey Woods and Meadowbrook Park — both in Urbana — are both good spots if you want to see birds that are migrating.
