Howard University on Friday said it was severing ties with music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs as a result of video depicting his assault on ex-girlfriend Cassie in 2016. The Howard University Board of Trustees moved to disband a scholarship in Combs’ name, terminate a 2016 “gift agreement” in which Combs pledged $1 million through his foundation, and accept the return of his honorary degree, conferred in 2014, according to a school statement.

Northern High holds commencement
Northern High School's Class of 2024, numbering over 340, graduated June 6 during an afternoon ceremony at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. The 50-year-old public school in Owings displayed its traditional Patriot Pride with musical performances by the school band and orchestra, along with the chamber choir. Almost 17% of Northern's senior class reported receiving at least one scholarship. Well wishes were offered by Calvert Board of Education President Antoine White, Principal Kevin A. Simmons and Calvert public schools' Superintendent Andraé Townsel. Calvert's other three public high schools —Calvert, Huntingtown and Patuxent — also held commencement exercises last week at Show Place Arena.

CP Academy students design lacrosse stick for use with wheelchair
A wheelchair-bound 9-year-old who’s into sports will be able to play lacrosse with a custom-made stick that allows her to launch a ball by pulling on a string. Stella Stakolosa, who has cerebral palsy, also swims and has participated in cheerleading and horseback riding. She accepted the lacrosse stick on May 28 from a group of high school juniors and seniors from College Park Academy who designed the accessibility device, adorned with her name, for the Anne Arundel County resident.

Each year the National History Day society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating history, operates a project-based contest for students in grades six through twelve across the country in local, statewide, and national competitions. This year, two Henley Middle School students, Celeste Ide and Adlee Bullard, clinched the top spot in the Virginia History Day junior performance category with their project titled “Edwin Chadwick and the Report of 1842: An Unlikely Hero’s Fight for Better Sanitation.” The duo is now gearing up to compete in the upcoming round of the National History Day competition scheduled for June 9-13 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
