CBMM Sea Glass Festival Returns November 21

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will host the fifth annual Holiday Edition of the Eastern Shore Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 21, on its waterfront campus in St. Michaels. More than 60 exhibitors will offer sea glass creations and handcrafted goods, with food vendors, live music on two stages and glassblowing demonstrations by artist Eli Cecil.

Halloween falls on a weekend this year, and beach bars and restaurants up and down the coast will be hosting costume parties. Music venues will also draw big crowds by hosting a number of concerts in the coming days. Ocean City's Crawl Street Tavern gets in Halloween spirit early In Ocean City, the Crawl Street Tavern will kick off the weekend with its Halloween Eve Party at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. It will feature an acoustic performance by Ballyhoo frontman and songwriter Howi Spangler at 7 p.m. ($15 in advance, $20 at the door). Expect to hear solo songs as well as reggae-rock tunes from Ballyhoo’s new “Bad Summer” album. Spangler and the group recently returned from a two-month tour of Europe. St. Mary’s library event explores cemeteries across the state

Tombstones often include the deceased individual’s name, date of birth and death, and sometimes a memorable quote or information about the person’s life. However, tombstones and cemeteries can also provide information about the community’s day-to-day lives and how they remembered those who passed. Earlier this week, the St. Mary’s County Library hosted a “Tales from the Crypt” virtual event with archaeologist Jim Gibb, who discussed his research experiences at cemeteries across Maryland. “I’ve probably investigated and or restored or excavated around 50 cemeteries at this point, mostly Maryland, but also a bit in Delaware,” he said. For example, Gibb was tasked with researching a cemetery founded in the 1850s near Notre Dame Academy in northern Baltimore city. Some grave markings listed where the buried individuals immigrated from. An increase in grave markers mentioning Ireland shows when the Irish community started to leave the area, Gibb said. A rising number of deaths in a specific year may reflect specific historical events, such as the Spanish influenza in 1918. Researching graveyards can help identify marginalized communities, such as Native Americans and African Americans, Gibb said. “In the case of Native Americans, they’re virtually invisible,” he said. “Many Native American groups interred or

The Oceans Calling Festival, a 3-day-long music festival held annually in Ocean City, Maryland, was created by OAR and C3 Presents. O.A.R. was founded in Maryland and is recognized for their astounding performances, one such at HFStival, an annual rock music festival that peaked in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. This spurred the idea for Roberge, the lead singer of O.A.R to create a major beach music festival in Maryland. Their immense contributions brought the Oceans Calling Festival’s most prominent characteristic from nostalgic bands to alternative rock.
