Gazebo being created by Elgin students at pocket park, trailhead
ELGIN — A new Elgin park is receiving a major addition. A gazebo is being built at the park, which is on .27 of an acre of land in the north end of town, by a team of Elgin High School students. The land is set to become a combination trailhead and pocket park that will be part of a 63-mile non-motorized trail along the existing tracks within the publicly-owned Wallowa-Union Railroad Authority corridor between Elgin and Joseph.

BAKER/POWDER VALLEY SOFTBALL: Bulldogs close regular season with split at Ontario
The Baker/Powder Valley softball team closed its regular season with a win, rallying past Ontario 12-7 to salvage a split in a doubleheader Friday, May 10 at Ontario. The Bulldogs clinched third place in the Greater Oregon League, earning a Class 4A play-in game.

IMBLER – For school districts that include them, senior projects serve as multifaceted learning opportunities, allowing students to organize unique hands-on projects and events for their communities, while also offering convenient introductions to their career paths. In the case of the Imbler school district, these projects include collaboration with the Oregon National Guard, highlighting the service of local search and rescue teams, and sharing firsthand knowledge on treating life threatening injuries, among a plethora of other topics. Elkhorn Media Group had the opportunity to recently speak with three Imbler students on their projects.

LA GRANDE — Contributions to the campaigns of the candidates for Union County commissioner run the gamut from zero to more than $40,000. Position 3 on the Union County Board of Commissioners is up for grabs. The seat is currently held by Donna Beverage, who is completing her second four-year term. Beverage cannot seek reelection because of a term-limit measure Union County voters approved in 2016, which disallows commissioners from serving more than eight years.

Baker City Police tipped off by FBI to alleged threat to Baker High by student
BAKER CITY – Baker City Police responded to a report of an online threat against Baker High School on Thursday, May 9. The Baker School District says the FBI flagged an online threat made by a student and notified local law enforcement yesterday, who immediately began an investigation, which is ongoing.

PENDLETON — Baker’s Rasean Jones broke his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles in winning the district title Saturday, May 11, at Pendleton. Jones won the race in 14.28 seconds. That beat his record of 14.37 seconds, which he set earlier this year.
