Sunny skies and warmer temperatures ahead before Friday’s heat advisory

If you’ve been thinking, “We need to squeeze a little more summer out of this,” the weather is going to cooperate — at least for the next few days. Today brings a much quieter and drier weather pattern to eastern Idaho and western Wyoming. Skies will clear, sunshine will take over, and storm chances will essentially disappear for the day. The atmosphere has dried out considerably as the monsoonal moisture feed retreats, leaving us with little of the instability and moisture needed to fire off afternoon thunderstorms.

Flash flood warning issued as severe thunderstorms hammer East Idaho

Powerful thunderstorms swept across a wide stretch of East Idaho on Saturday night, prompting a flash flood warning and bringing large hail, damaging winds and deadly lightning to several local communities. Around 9:45 p.m. Saturday the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of Blaine, Bingham, Butte and Power counties, in effect until 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters said heavy rain, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, has already produced ongoing or imminent flash flooding in the warned area, including near Craters of the Moon and Big Southern Butte. The warning covers flooding risks to small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying or poorly drained areas. "Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads," the weather service warned. "Most flood deaths occur in vehicles." Minutes later, the weather service issued a special weather statement warning of even stronger winds moving through parts of Jefferson, Butte, Bonneville and Bingham counties through 11 p.m. Saturday. Heise road partially reopens after mudslide as the possibility of more heavy rainfall looms

HEISE — Officials have partially reopened Heise Road, but weather experts say there is a chance for additional heavy rainfall that could cause more mudslides on Friday. Heise Road closed due to mudslides from heavy rainfall

HEISE — A road closure has been ordered due to mudslides caused by heavy rainfall in Jefferson County on Thursday afternoon. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Heise Road at the Snake River Bridge on 5050 East has been closed. The Big Rock Fire has created a burn scar, meaning an area where there is no vegetation to keep rocks and soil on the hillside when they are hit by a deluge of water. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding — East Idaho's weather is changing big time starting tonight

Heavy rain, rumbling thunderstorms and the threat of flash flooding and mudslides are bearing down on East Idaho, with rain rates expected to approach an inch per hour starting Wednesday night. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the Big Rock burn scar near Heise, warning that the incoming storms could send debris flows tearing through the area scorched by the wildfire earlier this month. The watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. Forecasters said anyone in or near the burn scar should prepare for the possibility of debris flows moving through the area and should stay current with updates from local authorities. But with heavy rain expected regionwide, flooding and mudslides could be a problem across East Idaho. The weather shift marks a dramatic turnaround from the record-breaking heat wave that has baked East Idaho for much of the summer and helped fuel this month's wildfires.
