ALTOONA, Pa. ( WTAJ ) — If you’ve been looking forward to Fort Roberdeau opening for their 2024 tour season, then you don’t need to wait any longer.

On Wednesday, the Revolutionary War Fort opened for the season.

“We always open May 1st, and it’s especially exciting this year because it’s the 50th anniversary of Fort Robredo becoming registered as a historic site,” Glenn Nelson, Fort Roberdeau’s Director said.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 29, 1974.

To get ready for tourists, Leadership Blair County Youth took a trip to Fort Roberdeau to complete a service project, and assemble their tin-punching tins, that will go in the gift shop.

“I think teaching them that doing jobs, that maybe not be glorifying jobs, that it’s good, that it’s all part of serving. So, you know, sometimes you might be the one planting flowers out here to get ready for Fort Roberdeau, or picking up the sticks on the trails. But whatever it is, this place needs some help because it’s a nonprofit and we’re just happy to help serve them,” Tami Chadick, Facilitator of Leadership Blair County Youth said.

The youth group is made up of 24 students; tenth graders from high schools all over Blair County.

“It’s amazing. I mean, we all live in this community. We all benefit from it. It’s just an amazing thing to be able to contribute back and give back to our community and support the next generation,” Michael Waibelmaharaj, a Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School student said.

For this group of students and the ones who will visit, the fort educates them on a significant piece of history.

“It’s important to care about American history and to tell the story of American history, how we came to be. And Fort Roberdeau was really unique because it showed the importance of natural resources and being able to contribute to the Revolutionary War,” Nelson said.
