Lindley Middle School teacher named Literacy Teacher of the Year

MABLETON — Dr. Shawndella Roberts, a seventh-grade reading teacher at Lindley Middle School, was named metro Atlanta’s inaugural Literacy Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Council on Literacy on Thursday. Roberts received the honor for her previous work as a third-grade literacy teacher at Birney Elementary School. Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, along with several representatives from the state, surprised Roberts and her students with the award. The honor comes with two cash prizes: a $1,500 prize for personal use and $500 that will go toward her classroom. Roberts said she was caught off guard with Thursday’s announcement. “It feels amazing. I work really hard with my students (and) do the best I can,” Roberts said. “Your goal as a teacher is to always grow your students. That’s what we all want to do. That’s what we all aim to do.” An educator for the last 25 years, this year is Roberts’ first at Lindley after transferring from Birney Elementary, and marks her 10th year with the Cobb School District. In her current position, Roberts teaches five different reading classes throughout the day, each with students on various reading levels including gifted/accelerated students, targeted students and those reading on-level.

2026-27 Discovery Titans Girls Basketball Preview

Discovery Titans Region: 8-AAAAAAA Coach: Adrienne Tinch 2025-26 record: 12-14, 6-6 8-AAAAAA Returning regulars: G Sheila Harris, Sr. G Shailo Mahon, Soph. Others to watch: F D’Anna Gabriel, Fr. Outlook: It’s a fresh look for Discovery with new head coach Adrienne Tinch taking over the program. She was a Hall of Fame player at Clark Atlanta and has worked at Southwest DeKalb and Spencer in her coaching career, but is new to Gwinnett County. The Titans do not have a host of returners off last year’s team, a squad that made it through a tough region with a .500 record in it and came up just short of the state playoffs. But Tinch’s first season will at least have some holdovers, and the roster has some pieces in place to create a fast start. Harris will be a team leader as the most experienced player back, and Mahon joins her in the backcourt coming off of a productive freshman season. “Shailo, I met her over the summer and she’s doing a great job,” Tinch said. “And I met Sheila, too, right before school started. All they do is bring the leadership, and they’re going to be able to carry the

Marietta, Pope girls ready to defend cross country titles

The Marietta girls will be trying to win their seventh straight title and the Pope girls will be trying to win their third as they compete in the cross country state championships Friday and Saturday in Carrollton. In Class AAAAAAA girls meet, Harrison joins Marietta as well-positioned to contend for the state title. Both dominated their respective sectionals, with five runners each finishing in the top 10. For Marietta, Alyssa Trevino came in second place individually with a time of 17 minutes, 55.13 seconds. Mary Kate Ninness finished fifth, with Avery Trevino sixth, Anna Caroline Donald eighth and Bailey Turner ninth. On the boys side, Marietta came in sixth, led by Lucas Fortenberry’s 27th-place finish. Marietta coach Jack Coleman said he was happy with how his girls ran last weekend, and they should have a strong chance to contend for the title. “If we can perform with the effort level that we gave Saturday, then we can live with whatever those results are,” said Coleman, whose squad has won eight of the last nine championships. “The girls are hoping to be in the mix and should be in the mix to have a race with Harrison for the state championship.

2026-27 Brookwood Broncos Boys Basketball Preview

Brookwood Broncos Region: 7-AAAAAAA Coach: Cory Cason 2025-26 record: 15-12, 6-9 Region 7-AAAAAA Returning regulars: G Bade Faduyile, Sr. 6-5 F Cam Knight, Sr. 6-2 G Roshan Krishnamurthy, Sr. 5-11 Others to watch: F Kameron Stephens, Jr. 6-4 G Kingsley Anderson Soph. 5-10 Outlook: Each year, Brookwood boys basketball faces one of the state’s most challenging roads to the playoffs, with last season being a prime example. Head coach Cory Cason’s team posted several victories over state tournament teams a year ago, including wins against East Hall and Peachtree Ridge — Final Four and Elite Eight finishers, respectively. Still, Cason knows that in a region that boasts perennial contenders in Meadowcreek, Berkmar, North Gwinnett, Norcross and aforementioned Peachtree Ridge, each night has to be your best. He hopes a veteran-led team can help the Broncos get over the hump. “This is the biggest senior class we've had since I've been here,” Cason said ahead of his fifth year. “We’ve got a lot of experience, a lot of guys back who played a lot of minutes. For some of them, this will be their third year playing heavy varsity minutes. From that standpoint, we’ve got a lot of guys that understand

Lotti was hired at Seckinger ahead of the high school’s second football season in 2023. His revamped Jaguars went 1-9 this season after heavy graduation losses from a record-breaking 2025 team. This year's team had to replace 20 of 22 starters. “Coach Tony Lotti has made the decision to step down as head football coach at Seckinger High School,” Seckinger athletic director Kelli Poff and principal Jimmy Fisher announced in a joint statement. “We are grateful to Coach Lotti and his family for their dedication, commitment and investment in our school and football program over the past four seasons. We thank him for his leadership and service and wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.” Seckinger went 6-5 in 2025 and reached the state playoffs for the first time in program history. It went 6-4 in 2024 and narrowly missed the postseason after a Week 10 loss. The Jaguars went 3-7 in Lotti’s first season after going 0-7 in their rough debut season in 2022. “It’s tough.
