MS Gas Prices Could Be Headed to 4-Year High

Gas prices in Mississippi are at their highest point since May and are threatening to reach a level not seen in more than four years. AAA says the statewide average this morning is $3.99. That’s up 10 cents in the past week. In May, the average price peaked at $4.01, the most Mississippians have paid since July of 2022. Locally, several counties are already averaging above $4, including Attala at $4.09, Carroll at $4.07, Neshoba at $4.05 and Winston at $4.01. The average price in Choctaw County is $3.99, it’s $3.97 in Holmes County, $3.95 in Leake County and $3.94 in Montgomery County.

Commuters are in for a fall full of detours along the I-20/I-55 freight corridor and U.S. highways 49 and 51. Approximately 36 bridges and 32 miles of interstate highway will be rehabilitated in Hinds and Rankin counties this fall while another five bridges are set to be replaced in Madison County as part of almost $700 million worth of infrastructure projects. Mississippi Department of Transportation provided the updates last week as work began on two U.S. 51 bridges between Tithelo Road and Way Road in Canton. What does the freight corridor project entail? Known as “The Big Fix,” the freight corridor improvement plan, estimated to cost approximately $400 million, is slated to start in fall and will see the resurfacing and modernization of 121 total lane miles on I-20 and I-55. It runs from Wiggins Road to just east of the Pearson Road/SR 468 interchange along I-20. On I-55, work will be done on the stretch from McDowell Road to north of the High Street interchange. The project will last for approximately two-and-a-half years and includes the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology that will “provide motorists with real-time travel information and traffic updates.” As a result, there will
