Arizona Woman Sentenced To Probation After Trying To Kill Her Husband By Poisoning His Coffee With Bleach

A woman from Arizona, who was convicted of attempted murder for poisoning her husband’s coffee, has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Melody Felicano Johnson, 38, entered a guilty plea to two charges of tampering with food or drink by adding poison or a harmful substance, according to @people. Johnson’s attorney had acknowledged her confession to placing small amounts of bleach in her husband Roby Johnson’s coffee maker on two separate occasions in 2023.

Per a statement from her estranged husband expressing his desire for her to avoid being in the slammer, Melody Felicano Johnson was sentenced by Pima County Superior Court Judge Javier Chon-Lopez to three years of probation along with mental health treatment.

Johnson wasn’t able to afford her $250,000 bond so she already spent nearly a year in prison. Prosecutors had argued for a high bond due to concerns about her being a flight risk, given her recent purchase of a home in the Philippines.

Initially facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder, Melody, who is from Tucson, pleaded not guilty in August 2023. However, her charge was reduced after she accepted a plea deal.

In March 2023, Melody was initially accused of poisoning Roby’s coffee after he detected a “foul taste.” At that time, they were residing in Germany with their child, as Roby serves as a member of the U.S. Air Force.

Upon suspecting foul play in his coffee for several weeks, Roby purchased pool testing strips and installed video cameras in a bid to capture Melody in the act of poisoning it, as per court records detailed by CNN affiliate KVOA in August 2023.

According to CNN, security cameras installed by Roby in the couple’s laundry room, positioned over their coffee machine, and another showing Melody moving between the two locations, apparently recorded her actions of pouring bleach into a container and subsequently transferring liquids from that container into the coffee machine.

As reported by NBC, Roby found out from the pool testing strips that the coffee exhibited “high levels of chlorine.” Despite this, he feigned drinking the coffee and delayed reporting the poisoning until his family returned home to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, as per his statements to investigators.
