Any Way You Slice It
Pi Day, you say? We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than by stuffing ourselves silly with a local sampling. What is it about pies? “I suspect that people feel a sense of tradition and simple goodness when eating pie,” says Maxie B’s owner, Robin Davis, who was featured in a 2012 Southern Living best-cakes-in-the-South article. Robin also knows a little something about pies. Chocolate chess, pecan, coconut custard, coconut cream, chocolate cream, lemon meringue, cherry, blueberry, peach, blackberry, sweet potato, pumpkin — 40 in all, seasonally available. “They are a little lighter than cake since they do not have icing.” Almost healthy, eh?

Jesse Smathers pays homage to the great Charlie Poole with “Take A Drink On Me”
“Though my familial roots are deeply planted in Western North Carolina, I was raised in Eden, NC — the home of Charlie Poole,” says Jesse Smathers, by way of introducing his latest single for Mountain Home Music Company, a lively rendition of “Take a Drink on Me,” a favorite from the legendary banjo picker and band leader’s high-spirited catalogue. It’s a perfect example of the mashup of bluegrass and old time string band music that’s at the center of Smathers’ musical vision — the one he pursues when he’s not working at his “day job” as guitarist and lead singer of bluegrass hitmakers, Lonesome River Band.

‘Wuthering Heights’ turns toxic love into empty spectacle | News 2 Reviews
GREENSBORO, N.C. — A little bit of backstory – my affinity for Wuthering Heights has always been fairly minimal. I first read Emily Brontë’s novel back in the twilight years of middle school long before I could fully grasp just how dark and emotionally brutal the story truly was. Still, my wife and I went into Emerald Fennell’s adaptation expecting a bold reinterpretation of modern relevance. Instead, what I got was not only a character assassination of Brontë’s work... but of the audience’s intelligence.
