Locals Swear by the Giant, Juicy Cheeseburgers at This No-Frills Tennessee Burger Joint

The burgers here are half-pound patties, hand-pattied and cooked fresh to order. That means you’ll wait around 20 minutes, and nobody seems to mind one bit. The dining room holds only a handful of tables. A few more sit outside on a back deck. The building is old, simple, and clean, which feels exactly right for a place this focused on food.

This Unassuming Tennessee Cafe Serves Biscuits and Gravy That Locals Can’t Stop Talking About

A honey bun goes on the grill here, and nobody thinks that’s strange. It’s simply part of the morning at a small, cash-only diner where biscuits and gravy get the most attention. I like how plain this place keeps things. The doors open at 6 AM on weekdays,...

Grab a Plate and Dig Into Red-Eye Gravy at These 7 Tennessee Breakfast Spots

Red-eye gravy starts with salty country ham drippings and a splash of coffee. That’s it. No flour, no thickener, just a thin, smoky pour that somehow tastes like a family recipe. I love that a sauce this humble still shows up on breakfast menus across Tennessee. It cuts through...

A Dopo is serving Knoxville something new. The Slice Bar opens this week

Hungry customers can skip the reservations and grab a slice of award-winning pizza at A Dopo, which on Nov. 5 is expanding with The Slice Bar . The Slice Bar will add 2,200 square feet of space behind A Dopo at 516 Williams St., just north of the Old City. The opening follows A Dopo recently being named to the Michelin Guide to the American South with a Bib Gourmand distinction , which recognizes restaurants serving “great food at a great value." "We've maxed out our wood-burning oven," co-owner Brian Strutz previously told Knox News. "We can't make more pizza right now." A Dopo, named to USA TODAY's 2025 Restaurants of the Year list , has built a loyal base of sourdough pizza lovers. Reservations are notoriously hard to come by, and Strutz knows there are plenty of Knoxville diners A Dopo hasn't been able to serve. The Slice Bar gives A Dopo a creative way to welcome more guests. It'll look a little different from A Dopo's front of house, but the same recipes remain at its core. What's on the menu at The Slice Bar by A Dopo? The Slice Bar will serve Roman-style pizza by the slice

Tucked Away in the Smoky Mountains, This Bakery Makes Cinnamon Rolls Worth the Scenic Drive

A cinnamon roll topped like strawberry shortcake sounds like breakfast and dessert shook hands and made a deal over coffee. I fully support that deal, and I suspect your sweet tooth does too. The same little bakery also tops rolls with apple pie filling, caramel and pecans, blueberries, and even...

Downtown Rutledge Holiday Market takes place Saturday

RUTLEDGE — The inaugural Downtown Rutledge Holiday Market will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the charming setting of the Nance House, Friendship Park and the Corum House in Downtown Rutledge. Shoppers will find a number of vendors inside the large community room in the historic Nance House for an experience reminiscent of times gone by, when proprietors sold a variety of merchandise in that space between the 1840s and 1900. That sense of bygone times will continue in “Tommy Toes,” a charming new café/coffee house located in the front parlor/dining room areas of the Nance House. The café will hold a soft opening during the Holiday Market, offering a variety of coffees, confections and other items for purchase. Open air shopping will take place in the inviting atmosphere of Friendship Park, just behind the Nance House. Vendors will line the paved walking path in the park beneath the canopy of old growth trees, with an assortment of handcrafted and original gift items, home décor, freshly baked confections, locally canned goods and more available for purchase. Shoppers will find an additional porch and indoor shopping opportunity at the historic Corum House, which can be

What’s New & What’s Next Downtown, Part 1: Restaurants & Retail

Downtown Knoxville has been keeping busy, and I’ve got a massive backlog of openings, announcements and developments to prove it. Time for a catch-up! Last week I again joined Compass Knox editor Scott Barker and co-founder Jesse Fox Mayshark on their Compass Points podcast to nerd out on all things downtown-ish. Naturally, I showed up with 10 FULL PAGES of notes about stuff happening in downtown proper alone. Since both hosts and producer Seth Barber failed to clear their next six hours for my monologue, I crammed what I could into a rapid-fire spoken word performance, confirming once and for all that I should stick to journalism.

Over In Lenoir City, Tennessee, Donna’s Diner Pours Coffee Like It’s 1975

There is a small building in Lenoir City with no sign out front, no name on the windows, and no card reader by the register, yet locals keep filling its seats before the sun is fully up.
