GDOT analyzing plans to build bridge in Richmond Hill | Exclusive
State transportation officials are advancing plans for a new bridge on Highway 144 in Richmond Hill, saying worsening erosion along the Ogeechee River could eventually threaten access to Fort McAllister State Park and surrounding communities. The bridge is currently in the design phase, according to a Georgia DOT spokesperson. The narrow, two-lane stretch of State Route 144 West sits atop an embankment and serves as the primary route to Fort McAllister State Park, nearby neighborhoods and Fish Tales, a popular waterfront restaurant. Georgia DOT says severe erosion, caused by the flow of the Ogeechee River, has advanced to several feet from the roadway. While crews have added riprap to help protect the embankment, officials say the materials continue to wash away, making the bridge a more permanent solution. Without additional measures, the erosion could eventually damage the roadway and disrupt access to the area. Back-to-School means back to basics on road safety
School buses are rolling again, college students are back on local streets, and mornings are busier than they've been in months. For drivers, parents, and pedestrians alike, it's the perfect time for a quick refresher on the habits that keep our roads — and our kids — safe. Buckle up, every time. Seat belts remain the single most effective safety tool in any vehicle, but they only work when worn correctly: lap belt low across the hips, shoulder belt snug across the chest. Make it a rule in your household — the car doesn't move until everyone's buckled in. Put the phone away. Distracted driving killed thousands of people nationwide last year, and school season brings extra distractions: busier drop-off lines, kids at bus stops, and college students crossing near campus. Set your GPS and playlist before you pull out of the driveway, and let calls and texts wait. Drive defensively. Don't assume the other driver, cyclist, or pedestrian has seen you. Scan intersections and crosswalks even on a green light, check blind spots before every turn, and slow down in poor weather or low light. And remember: when a school bus flashes red lights and extends its stop arm,
