Telfair Museums to host community in convening, exploring African American basket traditions

Telfair Museums will present “Community in Conversation: Carrying African American Basket Traditions,” a special convening and community dialogue presented in conjunction with the museum’s exhibition, “Roots in the Rushes: African American Basketry of the Lowcountry.” The convening is open to the public and will take place November 5-7, 2026, at the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy. Registration is encouraged. Bringing together acclaimed scholars, master artisans, cultural advocates, and community members, the event will examine the rich history and enduring significance of African American basketmaking traditions in the coastal Southeast. “Basket sewing is much more than a craft.
