LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Law enforcement patrols will be stepped up across the region this weekend in search of motorists who overdo their celebrations of Cinco de Mayo.

Police departments will be on heightened alert throughout the day Sunday and into early Monday morning. Law enforcement officials urged people planning to celebrate to take alternate means of transportation.

"Don't put yourself and others on the road at risk by driving impaired," Torrance Police Sgt. David Koenig said in a statement. "If you're planning to celebrate with a drink or two, leave your keys at home and designate a sober driver."

Authorities also reminded drivers that alcohol is not the only substance that can lead to impaired driving. Marijuana, prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect motorists.

Drivers were urged to do their research and understand how certain drugs might affect driving ability.

The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, while also urging residents to celebrate responsibly, reminded establishments that serve alcohol that they also play a role in keeping the roads safe.

"ABC licensees can help keep communities safe by checking IDs and ensuring customers are not over-served," ABC Director Joseph McCullough said in a statement. "Let's all do our part to keep these celebrations safe this holiday."
