Topeka, Lawrence in path of severe thunderstorms expected to develop after 4 p.m. Tuesday

The National Weather Service on Tuesday morning upgraded from “slight” to “enhanced” the chance that Topeka would see severe weather after 4 p.m. that day.

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible in an area where chances are slight while numerous severe storms are possible in an area where chances are enhanced, says the weather service website .

Strong to severe storms are expected to develop after 4 p.m. Tuesday along an area that includes Marysville and Manhattan, then move southeast into an area that includes Lawrence and Topeka, the weather service's Topeka office said on its website.

Chances will be medium to high for large hail, medium for high winds and low to medium for flooding and tornadoes, the weather service said.

Hail, high winds, flooding and "a few tornadoes" are then possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, it said.

Multiple rounds of precipitation bringing rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are predicted Tuesday and Wednesday in the area the weather service's Topeka office covers in north-central, northeast and east-central Kansas, that office's website said.

Topeka officially saw a total of 2.24 inches of rainfall between Thursday and Sunday, it said.
