To the editor: TPS’ Ellis remembered for kindness

Many years ago, my baby sister was a new graduate, with an education degree from the University of Toledo. She wanted to work for the local school district of Toledo Public Schools. Not knowing where exactly to apply and very nervous as well, she waited for the elevator to arrive. It came down, the door opened. She must have looked lost enough for, what she told me she remembered, this nice, tall, Black man asked her if she needed help. She told him her situation, and this gentleman turned around and went back up in the elevator with her and showed her where to apply. She got the job. She later found out that this kind man was none other than the Honorable Dr. Crystal Ellis.

Rest in peace, Sir.

Protesters should pay off their loans

The college students who are protesting against Israel and Jewish students, and chanting, “Death to America,” are these the students who President Biden wants to pay off their student loans? It seems to me if they have the time to protest, they would be better served, as would the taxpayers, if they went out and got jobs and paid for their own tuition.

EVs should rely on free market

Bob Clark-Phelps’ letter to The Blade on April 28 champions the cause of electric vehicles. He is one of many who tout the EV as the savior of our environment. Others promote a more prudent due-diligence plan to look closely at all pros and cons before charging full speed ahead.

Mr. Clark-Phelps is correct on one count, “Let the free market do its job.” l whole-heartedly agree. That means leveling the playing field by eliminating all government subsidies, incentives, and tax credits for EVs and no punitive fees on fossil fuel emissions.

Simply put, let the free market system of supply and demand for EVs decide the right course of action for their future. Such an approach has been the cornerstone of our economy for 250 years and has served us well. Let it play out.

Student loans a moral obligation

Eileen Bensen’s letter concerning student loans on the “Opinion” page last Sunday was right on target. There is, indeed, a moral obligation as well as a legal requirement for those who accepted student loan funds to pay them back in full. It is most certainly not the taxpayers who should be covering those loans. What could be next, perhaps public funds to cover loans in connection with house mortgages?

Tennis vs. pickleball

I learned how to play tennis at a local public tennis court. In my part of town tennis instructors were nonexistent so l bought magazines from the local drugstore to find out whether an Eastern grip or Western grip would be more appropriate for my nascent introduction to this wonderful sport.

I was captivated by the Ken Rosewell backhand which was a thing of beauty and which I never was able to mimic. One of our local players was John Wiley who played with the expertise and beauty of a professional dancer. Tennis strokes are graceful; tennis footwork is like dance. He had it all. I don’t play anymore but I remember the older players at my public court and the elegance of their play. So enters pickleball. I see today’s old people hop around and poke at a yellow plastic ball. The elegance of a ball-peen hammer.

Need roundabout at Eastside intersection

In light of two recent car accidents at the corner of Navarre Avenue and Oak Street on Toledo’s east side, I cannot imagine why the city of Toledo hasn’t thought to apply the universal solution to all problems related to traffic intersection accidents in our city. That solution, of course, is a roundabout. It appears that East Toledo has once again been neglected. While neighborhoods in the rest of the city enjoy the benefits and beauty provided by the construction of roundabouts, dangerous intersections on the other side of the river have been ignored. This situation should be remedied as soon as possible.
