Body recovered from scene of East Toledo fire

Emergency crews found a 74-year-old man’s body in the burned-out remains of his East Toledo mobile home.

Fire was reported just after 9 a.m. Monday at the home of Robert Mata in the 1400 block of Miami Street, and the first arriving crews reported black smoke pouring from the home. Firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze and search the mobile home were hampered by hoarder-like conditions in the home, fire officials said.

Once the fire was under control, emergency crews performed a second search and found Mr. Mata’s body near the front of the mobile home. His cause of death remains under investigation.

There were no audible smoke alarms working at the time of the fire, authorities said.
