A Toledo man was sentenced to 2½ years in prison Monday for the accidental shooting death of a 15-year-old boy early last year.

Curtis Hogan, 21, of the 100 block of Essex Street, had pleaded guilty Thursday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to reckless homicide for the Feb. 3, 2023, death of Donald Hogan at his family’s home in the 500 block of Shasta Drive. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors reduced a three-year firearm specification in the indictment to one year.

Hogan also pleaded guilty to failure to comply with a police officer’s signal in a separate case for which two other counts were dropped.

Judge Dean Mandros sentenced Hogan to 18 months for each of the third-degree felony charges plus the one-year specification attached to the homicide, for a total prison term of four years.

The boy’s grandmother, Mary Hogan, said at the time the shooting resulted from an ill-fated attempt to get a jammed cartridge out of a handgun. He died shortly afterward in a hospital.
