USA Names Economic Development Chief
Dr. Michael Chambers, associate vice president for research and economic development at the University of South Alabama (USA), has been named the university’s chief economic development officer. Chambers previously served as chair of the Mobile Chamber board. He serves or has served as a board member on the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation, the AlabamaGermany Partnership and BioAlabama. He has been at USA since 2015, and in 2021, he was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey to the newly formed Innovate Alabama. Prior to joining USA, Chambers founded and served as president and CEO of Swift Biotech, a company developing technologies to fight cancer. He also helped found and served as CEO of InnoRx Pharmaceuticals, an ocular drug delivery company. He holds bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Alabama and earned his PhD from the University of Geneva.

The developers for Fast Pace Urgent Care paid $225,000 for land on Highway 98 just east of Schillinger Road in Semmes and plans to build an urgent care facility there, according to Herrington Realty, which handled the transaction. A local investor paid $350,000 for a 55-unit storage unit facility at 215 Saraland Boulevard in Saraland, according to Brandon Broadus of CRE Mobile, who represented the seller. Tammy Curl of Roberts Brothers worked for the buyer. Infirmary Home Health Agency/LHC has leased 7,500 ft2 of office space on the 10th floor of the Bel Air Tower at 851 East I-65 Service Road in Mobile, according to Nathan Handmacher of Zarzour Cos., who represented the landlord. AMNS Calvert expansion gets funding boost from DOE
CALVERT, Ala. (WALA) - A planned steel manufacturing facility near Mobile got a major boost in funding earlier this week from the U.S. Department of Energy. ArcelorMittal Calvert, wholly owned by ArcelorMittal, is planning an advanced manufacturing facility in Calvert that could deliver 150,000 metric tons of domestic production capacity of non-grain-oriented electrical steel (NOES).
