A Secret Safe Place was established in 1998 by former Mobile District Attorney John Tyson Jr., after a number of newborns in the Mobile area were found dead. Either abandoned or in at least one case, drowned in a toilet.

Domke Market To Move, Expand To Amici Trattoria
Domke Market, a West Mobile wine bar and market, will rebrand and expand to become Amici Trattoria, expected to open in mid-August 2024. Amici Trattoria will open in the 4,500-ft2 space formerly occupied by Margaux and The Hungry Owl. Amici combines an Italian Trattoria showcasing Treviso, Italy-based Chef Luigi Tonghini’s authentic Italian cuisine and a wine market featuring more than 400 wines and gourmet items, alongside a wine and craft cocktail bar. The new space features indoor and outdoor dining, as well as private meeting space at 7899 Cottage Hill Road. Amici is currently hiring staff for the kitchen, market, and restaurant. Dining will be available by reservation only for dinner, with plans to expand to lunch and walk-in service within a month of opening. Domke Market is a casual wine market specializing in small-production wines, gourmet products and tasting events currently at 720 Schillinger Rd. South, Suite 8. It is a five-time Lagniappe Nappies Award winner for Best Wine & Gourmet Shop. Amici Trattoria is a partnership between Brooke Goff and Shane McCullough.

Building Risk Communication Skills Workshop Announced
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Gulf of Mexico Disaster Preparedness Response Center, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and University of South Alabama Center of Disaster Healthcare Preparedness are hosting Building Risk Communication Skills on September 10 at 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The location is the NOAA center at 7344 Zeigler Blvd. in Mobile. The workshop aims to motivate attendees toward action to reduce risk and help them develop new skills to better connect with diverse audiences. It will also allow attendees to practice their new skills, apply them to their own risk communication strategies and collaborate with peers on local risk communication challenges. The organizers said responses to questions during registration will help them customize the training to be reflective of local risk communication issues. Culture Fest Coming To Africatown Heritage House Tomorrow
Clotilda: The Exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House at 2465 Winbush St. in Mobile will host a free Culture Fest 2024 on July 27 at 4-8 p.m. Entertainment will include African drumming; choir performances; African folktales; a play; a historical apothecary class; vendors; food trucks; activities for children, such as face painting, African crafts and interactive games; a live community artwork project; free snow cones; and free school supplies for students. “We are so excited to host Culture Fest for the first time,” said Jessica Fairley, Africatown Heritage House manager. “This is an opportunity for the greater Mobile area to visit the Clotilda exhibit, all while getting a glimpse of the rich heritage of Black culture.” For more information, contact Fairley at phone: (251) 206-5268.
