Cal Poly Humboldt Artist Wins 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest
A painting by Cynthia Fisher of Hamilton, Montana has been chosen as the winner of the 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest. “I learned to love waterfowl during my years in college at Cal Poly Humboldt,” said artist Fisher.” “I spent all my times studying ducks and other birds, doing taxidermy, and went on the first of many Duck hunts after that,” said artist Fisher. Judges first noted the position and orientation of the mallards in Fisher’s painting, describing the ducks in flight as an action shot. The painting reflected the background as Sutter Buttes, a small mountain village near Yuba City in Sutter County. Artist Fisher’s Blue Ribbon winner and three runners up will be on display at the Pacific Flyway Decoy Association Annual Wildlife Art Festival in Sacramento.

Supervisors Misunderstand What is a Medical Emergency
One would think that as often as the words, “We are a poor County” are uttered in various Del Norte County Board meetings, the words would resonate and the Board would act as though it were true. Contrary to that assessment, the Board spends taxpayer money like the proverbial “Drunken Sailor.” Millions of taxpayer dollars flow into the County’s coffers each year, the County’s government continues to grow and no apparent consideration is given to those, at least in theory, the supervisors are sworn to...

I want to thank Kevin Hendrick for his “In my View” column, which he has written for the Triplicate the past two years. I greatly appreciate the effort he put into his weekly column, the range of subjects covered and the depth of his explanations. I never thought the column was too long and I applaud his effort to always separate fact from opinion. At a time when politics has...

Letter: Let the kids play ball on the grass area at Pine Grove School
I am writing about a concern I have regarding playground policy at Pine Grove School. I do not know if the same policy exists for other schools. On Monday, May 20, I was at the school participating in their Family Lunch program with my son-in-law, small grandson and my 2nd grade grandson. Aside from the wind it was a lovely day and fun event, as usual. However, on this day...

Guest Column: Schools’ Enrollment Down, Board Keeps Spending
I haven’t been to a school board meeting since I learned the Oversight Committee for the previous $25 million General Obligation Bond was a joke, even when it actually met. For the past 16 years the County’s property owners and renters have paid down less than a quarter of the amount owed on the 2008 version of “Help! It’s for the children” Bond. A according to the District, at the time, student occupation grown had made it imperative that the District’s classroom shortage necessitated some...

Car Shows Provide Economic Shot-in-the Arm and a Lot More
Attending a week-end car show is much more than observing a beautiful paint job on a classic hot rod or antique vehicle. Across coastal Northern California and Oregon, as many as 300 vehicles strut their stuff on any given summertime week-end. Most of the Benefit Shows in our geography are celebrating 30 years or more anniversaries. Area car Shows provide a venue for like-minded folks to gather and admire beautiful...

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is announcing its final environmental impact statement analyzing proposed barred owl management alternatives to protect northern and California spotted owls in Washington, Oregon and California from invasive barred owls.
