Carl Davis Smith
Mr. Carl Davis Smith, age 81 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. He was born in Stokes County, NC on February 24, 1942, to the late Tom Smith and Stacey George Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Smith. Carl had retired from DuPont. His lifelong passion was attending and participating in car shows.
Richard Lewis Shockley, Jr.
Mr. Richard Lewis Shockley, Jr., age 78, of Stuart, Virginia left this earthly life on Friday, June 23, 2023, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on November 15, 1944, to the late Richard Lewis Shockley, Sr., and the late Eva Mae Smart Shockley. Richard faithfully served in the United States Navy, was a member of Concord Church, and enjoyed being at home with his beloved family. Mr. Shockley will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.
Reverend Richard Glenn Elgin
Reverend Richard Glenn Elgin died at the age of 91 on Sunday, June 18, 2023. He was the son of the late Ora Roberson Elgin and Buren Alexander Elgin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty Jo Ann Phillips Elgin, his brothers James William “Bill” Elgin and Randolph Elgin, his sister Patricia Elgin Rorrer and his dear friend Oma Lea Merricks.
Brenda Hopkins Brogdon
Brenda Hopkins Brogdon, 65, of Davidson County, went to be with her lord and savior on June 22, 2023. She was born on November 27, 1957, in Stuart, Virginia to the late Earley Rufus Hopkins, Jr., and his wife, Dottie Puckett Hopkins. She was a manager at CJ’s Deli. She is preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Hopkins.
Busy bees at the library
Master Gardeners led a special program about bees as part of the Summer Reading Program at the library. Amber and Colin Rakes attended dressed in beekeeping suits. They taught attendees about honey bee behavior and beekeeping, including showing a smoker, a bee stinger, bee wax and tasting spring and fall honey from their hives.

It’s been quite a week for Patrick County Cougars baseball. After winning the school’s first state championship on June 10, Tucker Swails was named VHSL Class 2 Player of the Year on June 15, the first such award in school history. Also receiving VHSL Class 2 state-wide honors were head coach Tal Swails, named Coach of the Year, and Jai Penn, named to the All-State Team as an outfielder.
Volunteers restore the Hospice Memory Garden
Tom and Carol DeBusk are leading a group of community volunteers in restoring the Hospice Memory Garden, which is adjacent to DeHart Park in Stuart. Volunteers are resetting memory bricks, designing erosion control, mulching and planting. Williams surged to victory in GOP primary
Del. Wren Williams, R-Stuart, won Tuesday’s GOP primary election against Del. Marie March, R-Floyd County, unofficial results indicate. Williams carried the vote in Patrick, Henry and Carroll counties and the City of Galax, with March more popular among Floyd County voters. Boyd selected as Artist-In-Residence
Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail: The Crooked Road selected Jared Boyd as the 2023-2024 Artist-In-Residence. Boyd grew up in the small community of Laurel Fork in Carroll County, Virginia and spent the early years of his life surrounded by old-time music on both sides of his family. He learned clawhammer banjo from Ray Chatfield through the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program as well as from his grandfather Jimmy Boyd, co-founder of the Franklin County, VA old-time dance band, The Dry Hill Draggers.

Solar amendment, plan get nod
The Patrick County Board of Supervisors approved its amended solar ordinance and Comprehensive Plan at its June 12 meeting. County Attorney Mark Popovich said the amendment to the originally adopted solar ordinance was because there is a question as to the authority of the county to adopt solar ordinance without zoning.
