Vines' Christmas show shares gospel joy
FOUNTAIN — With all the spirit of an old-fashioned camp meeting and the energy of a high-octane nightclub, Alice Vines’ annual “Christmas Joy” event on Saturday afternoon proved it was well-named. Vines is known in the area as a pastor and key member of the Glorifying Vines Sisters, a gospel group that has been around so long, even with Alice’s tenure of 50 years, she considers herself a latecomer. The part-service, part-party has been held for a dozen years, Vines said, but typically had been in Farmville. This year, the R.A. Fountain General Store was the venue of choice, as it is on the same block as the show’s sponsor, the Music Maker Foundation. The foundation’s Denise Duffy greeted the audience with what proved to be mutual admiration. “All these artists have been helping us get our recording studio off the ground,” she said, referring to the musicians setting up to play. “I think you’ve got four generations of Vines singing in the family. I’d like to thank Fountain for being so welcoming of Music Maker.” Tim and Denise Duffy founded the nonprofit in 1994 to care for artists and preserve music that was being lost. The Crimestoppers On The Case
The Crimestoppers, part of the legendary Vines family of gospel musicians, have quietly become Music Maker Studio’s go-to backing vocal group. If you’ve heard anything recorded at the new studio in Fountain, North Carolina, chances are you’ve already heard them lending their voices to albums by fellow partner artists like Albert White and Leonard “Lowdown” Brown. Rooted in generations of eastern North Carolina gospel tradition, Anthony “Amp” Daniels, his daughter KeAmber Daniels, and niece Christy Moody come together here as a powerful vocal unit. On On The Case, the trio steps away from the sacred soul of their family groups and dives headfirst into straight-up soul, drawing from the spirit of Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, and The Staple Singers.

WINTERVILLE — The Winter Wonder event in Winterville brought the community out en masse last week for holiday fun and excitement in what organizers said is one of the town’s most anticipated events. Winter Wonder included the town’s parade, Christmas Market and and tree-lighting celebration. Diane White, director of Winterville Parks and Recreation, said more than 80 units participated in the annual Christmas parade, a centerpiece of the Dec. 13 celebration. “It’s a great opportunity for everybody to come out and enjoy the festivities and see the different floats and vehicles, and we even had some vehicles from our public works and electric department, our Town Council and some of our volunteer boards,” said White. The parade began at 2 p.m. with the South-Central High School U.S. Army JROTC leading the procession, followed by this year’s grand marshal, Jesse Riggs of the Winterville Historical and Arts Society. “It was an honor to serve as this year’s grand marshal riding in the Winterville Historical and Art Society’s 1923 Model T,” said Riggs. “We also have a wonderful Back in Time Christmas display at the Winterville Museum with our 1940s Christmas room, our 1901 kitchen and our working vintage 1950s model train
