Tallahassee's west side will soon get a new Five Below.

By July 1, the national chain will be moving into the former Aveda Institute Tallahassee site at the Westend Square Shopping Center off West Pensacola Street. The retailer is slated to be open by November.

Five Below is known for selling an array of items, toys, candy and clothes for $5 or less.

However, in 2019, the store began selling some items for more than $5. Toys and games at up to $10 are displayed in a designated “Ten Below Gift Shop" area.

The new location will be Tallahassee's second Five Below store front. In 2018, the first Five Below debuted at Governor's Marketplace, 1654 Governor’s Square Blvd, in the former Famous Footwear space.

Westend Square Shopping Center attracting national names

At the Westend Square, formerly University Village Shopping Center, the 20-acre shopping center continues to attract new national retailers and restaurants to Tallahassee's west side.

Starbucks and Charlie Cheesesteak, a sandwich chain and has also has a popular location at Governor Square mall, opened about two months ago. Planet Fitness, the nation's largest fitness center chain, plans to open its doors in August.

"We have a lot of exciting stuff," said Steven Leoni, co-founder of Student Housing Partners, the shopping center's property manager.

In addition, more unnamed tenants are slated to come to the shopping center following major renovations to façade and areas. Leoni said it's not final yet because they haven't signed their formal lease.

In total, he said the new tenant presence at Westend Square represents an estimated investment of $15 million to $20 million. Last year, city commissioners unanimously directed staff to begin working on placemaking and signage for the West Pensacola Street area due to the private sector renaissance taking place.

"I would think they believe the south corridor, we call it the Westend District, is definitely a hot spot for national retailers," said Leoni, adding the shopping center also brought in other national names like City Gear, the Pet Supermarket and Aldi. "If Starbucks wants to be right here, front and center, right next to McDonald's, that tells you something."
