“That’s a really bad hangover,” said state Sen. Jay Block, a Republican from Rio Rancho, of waking up to Democrat Deb Haaland as governor-elect. Block has a bleak forecast for the next four years. “I think it’s going to look like Biff’s ‘Back to the Future II,’” he said, referring to the sequel’s alternate timeline where the villain, Biff Tannen, runs a lawless Hill Valley from his own casino.
By Kevin Hendricks — Voters in this year’s elections took away the next governor’s New pocket veto and gave the nation’s last volunteer legislators a salary. Voters approved all four constitutional amendments on the ballot Tuesday by wide margins, with support ranging from 63% to 75%, according to unofficial results. Last night, the 2026 midterm election results delivered plenty of historic firsts. It was a particularly powerful night for Native American representation: Democrat Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman to be elected as Governor of New Mexico, while Peggy Flanagan—the current lieutenant governor of Minnesota—became the first Native woman to win the U.S. Senate seat in her state. (And there could even be a third victory for the Indigenous community today: at the time of publishing this story, Alaska’s Mary Peltola is currently leading the race for a Senate seat, too.)
