Teriyaki eatery gets 75 red points. Here are Pierce Co. food scores for Oct. 26
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department usually inspects over 100 establishments each week, whether that be a restaurant, coffee stand, grocery store or school cafeteria. While most of those establishments pass the inspection, some need extra help. During a routine inspection, each establishment is graded on a points system. Red points are tacked on for critical violations, which are likely to cause foodborne illness, according to the health department. Examples include improper handwashing and poor temperature control. Most critical violations are corrected on site during the inspection, according to the health department. Blue points are tacked on for non-critical violations, which could lead to critical violations if they’re not corrected. Examples include improper cleaning of equipment or some maintenance issues. Most establishments are inspected between one and four times a year. Establishments that receive between 0 and 30 points get a passing score, while establishments that receive 35 or more red points are required to be re-inspected by the health department. If establishments have repeated critical violations, they could be closed down by the health department. Establishments can also be closed for an imminent health hazard, like a fire, a flood or a loss of power. Even if establishments have more

The ice cream in the shakes at this little burger stand is custom made by a beloved Washington creamery. That detail alone made me sit up, because shakes usually play backup to the burger and here they might steal the show. The fries get serious respect too, since they are...

After nearly 40 years in same family, venerable Tacoma bar under new ownership
The Spar, one of Tacoma’s oldest taverns that has been shepherded by the same family for nearly 40 years, has been sold to a new — still local — group of owners. They closed the bar temporarily on Sunday for a light refresh and will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m., just in time for the weekly jazz set. The shake-up comes about seven months after the death of longtime Spar matriarch Kathy Manke following a battle with cancer. She had purchased the Old Town haunt with a friend in 1988, carrying it through the decades until the late 2010s, when it was bought by her son, Kris Manke, and granddaughters Rena Manke and Adrielle Flinders with their families. According to a Facebook and Instagram post first shared Oct. 27, Manke and Flinders had discussed the future with their grandmother, whom they called GG, and “felt our chapter at The Spar was coming to an end.” “We let her know we had found the perfect owners, her longtime friends Bernie [Unwin] and Serina [Hood], the ultimate Spar flies,” they wrote. “They brought in partners Link [Elliott] and Stephen [Page], two more Spar flies, and John Farrell, a longtime
