SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s tunes like the ones Reverend Doctor Kevin Stephens plays on his piano, that he hopes inspires children to want to play a musical instrument.

“We decided that most children in our community are very influenced by music. Whether they can play it or not, they love music,” he said. “So, we decided to start this program where we pay professional instructors to come here and teach.”

Through the music mentorship program, children get to practice and play an instrument every day of the week.

“For digital, that’s where we get the most kids. Guitar is really good, and everybody loves the drums,” said Stacey Bailey, the programming director at the Dunbar Center.

It means more than music. It provides a safe and educational environment for children after school.

“The way I look at it, in one hour, what kind of trouble can this kid get into in one hour,” Stephens said. “For that one hour that they are here, not only are they focusing on something else be it the music, but they think ‘ok I can come tomorrow too.'”

Only a few weeks into the program, and we may have a future Mozart in our backyard.

“I see a future pianist,” Bailey said.

“I see potential coming from a professional musician,” Stephens said.

Near the end of the summer, the students will put on a concert and get to make a professional C.D. so they have something to remember and be proud of.

Parents can sign their children up for the Music Mentorship Program in person at the Dunbar Center.

They are also accepting donations through Cash App for programs at $Dx01021946.
