Your Stories Q&A: What’s going on with the parking system at the Syracuse Airport?

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer!

The Your Stories Team has received multiple questions and complaints about the parking situation at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Some viewers wonder why they can’t reserve parking online like they have in the past, while others claim to have issues with the exit gates in the parking lot.

One viewer wrote:

“ Whether you park in the Economy lot, garage lot or overflow lot, to exit, an attendant has to manually charge your card on a portable card charger and then manually open the gate to exit. “

The YS Team contacted the airport for answers. We’re told the parking issues viewers are experiencing are connected.

“ Parking at the airport is managed by SP+. The SRAA was finalizing a longer-term plan to replace the aging “Revenue Control System.” However, before this longer-term plan could be enacted, critical components of the existing system reached the end of their life. In the short term, the SRAA is actively engaged with SP+ to install a short-term solution to get these services back online for our travelers (pre-book parking, eliminating the manual processing of payments, etc.). Longer term, the SRAA will completely replace the Revenue Control System ,” The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority said in a statement.

If you go to the parking section on the airport’s website , you’ll notice a warning: “ Reservations are currently unavailable until further notice. “

The communications team at the airport said the system issues started in late February and impacted all lots.

“We expect the short-term fix to be operational in the next three weeks. The new system is expected to be installed and operational by late summer ,” The communications team said in an email, dated April 11.

It won’t be a cheap fix. The airport estimates a new system will cost approximately $380,000. It said that figure also includes other, “ground transportation upgrades.”

The SRAA said the upgrades will be paid for through airport revenue, not tax dollars.
