Track and field tracker: Updates from Day 2 of the 2024 Ohio state meet
DAYTON — The second day of the 2024 Ohio High School Athletic Association track and field state finals at Welcome Stadium will feature competition in all three divisions. Below will be updates for Toledo-area athletes. This story will be updated throughout the day. Demolition of UT's former Palmer Hall begins; green space planned
The final phase of the University of Toledo’s engineering campus metamorphosis is coming to an end. On Thursday, UT interim President Matt Schroeder sat behind the controls of a backhoe, pulling down sections of the former Palmer Hall. The revamping of the engineering campus began in 2018. A $22 million renovation of the North Engineering building was completed in 2023. It opened for students in the fall. Mr. Schroeder said the demolition and the completion of the new academic quad is the final phase of the project.
Spelling-bee run by Otsego Junior High sixth grader ends in quarterfinals
Kendall Mehl, the Otsego Junior High School sixth grader who won The Blade’s annual Northwest Ohio Championship Spelling Bee in March, is out of the running for the top award in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “Kendall made it through to the quarterfinals today, but got out in the round this morning,” her mother, Jessica Mehl, told The Blade in an email. “She had an amazing experience.” The finals are at 8 p.m. Thursday and can be viewed online at spellingbee.com. There are 245 competitors — the largest since 2019 — including six former finalists and three four-time national participants.
Seniors key to Anthony Wayne's run to state softball semifinals
As Anthony Wayne High School heads to its third Division I state softball final four on Friday, the Generals will be bidding farewell to a group of senior players who have been part of the best four-year run in program history. Third-ranked Anthony Wayne will take a 29-1 overall record into Friday's D-I state semifinal matchup against second-ranked Pataskala Watkins Memorial (30-1) at Firestone Stadium in Akron at 5:30 p.m. That mark by the Generals, which included a perfect 14-0 Northern Lakes League record, is part of a four-year AW record of 114-12 overall and 50-6 in the highly-competitive NLL. The only season AW did not reach the final four since 2021 came in 2022, when a top-ranked Generals squad finished 30-1 with a 5-4 regional semifinal loss to NLL rival Springfield, which finished as D-I state runner-up that year.
