In the rolling hills of north-central Mississippi, the city of Winona grew from a railroad settlement into one of the region’s important commercial and political centers. Long before automobiles and interstate highways reshaped travel across the state, trains brought merchants, farmers, laborers, and visitors through a town whose streets, hotels, and businesses developed around the railroad tracks. Its position between the Mississippi Delta and the eastern portion of the state helped establish Winona as a trading center, while its selection as the county seat of Montgomery County in 1871 gave the growing community an importance that extended beyond transportation.

Today, Lodi is an unincorporated community, but during the nineteenth century, it possessed the institutions of a recognized town, including a municipal government, a post office, and residents whose lives became connected to some of the most consequential events in Mississippi history. Its story includes the Civil War, Reconstruction, the development of neighboring Winona, and the agricultural economy that supported generations of families throughout the surrounding countryside.

A Landmark on the Move

Some knew it as a schoolhouse, some an antique store but it began as a Presbyterian Church in Smyrna on Center Road in Attala County. The building is now being moved again. In the early 1900’s the building sat stately on Center Road and was home to a robust congregation at Smyrna Presbyterian Church. The old building was replaced by a more modern brick building and was moved to Kosciusko for the first of three stops. Its first stop was an antique store on the west side of Highway 35 bypass.
