This Indiana Town Has A Historic Gymnasium That Basketball Fans Can Still Visit Today

One-third of a famous basketball movie was filmed inside a single small-town gym. Even better, you can walk onto that court today and shoot baskets for free. The building was reportedly headed for demolition before Hollywood showed up in 1985. Now it greets tens of thousands of visitors every year.

Meet the construction worker who makes films

“Concrete finishers” ensure that a job site’s concrete is right. Screenwriters create stories for film; filmmakers then make a film. Las Vegas native and current Gosport, Indiana, resident Roc Anthony Bates Sr. does all three and has cemented his success in a second career. (Bates added the “Sr.” to clarify that he isn’t his son, whose name is similar.) Bates Sr., who continues to work in construction, has had a career in concrete finishing. But for $3 you can see his original vampire film, “Constance and Violence Part II" on Nov. 11 at the historic Tivoli Theatre in Spencer. (The younger Bates did hair and makeup for “Constance and Violence” Part I.) As a little boy, Bates Sr. informed his mother that he would be a rock star. The desire for work in the arts remained. “I started this (vampire) story about 10 years ago,” he said, “and let it sit. I had the whole story in my head.” He also had, by then, a nice 401K with which to finance his plan. And, his nest had recently been emptied of offspring. The single father was “learning to live without kids. I didn’t know what to buy at the grocery

Retro Indy: Two decades after stadium crumbled, another Hoosier Dome bites the dust

Two decades ago, the words Hoosier Dome conjured up images of the landmark stadium that served as one of Indianapolis' largest and most important sporting and entertainment venues, which was demolished in 2008. These days, the name represents almost the opposite: A hole-in-the-wall concert space that can't fit a 200th of the 60,000 fans that its namesake once housed. And in a few more years, the name might bring to mind something entirely different from the arena or the niche club. The current Hoosier Dome at 1627 Prospect St., which slotted itself into Indianapolis' independent music scene in 2010, will be a bygone institution by 2027. The Hoosier Dome announced Sept. 29 that it will shut its doors by the end of the year . Management attributed the decision to close to new owner RCA Properties, a local developer with a portfolio of mostly residential projects. According to a social media post from the venue, RCA's redevelopment plans for the building don’t include the club. The company did not respond to questions from IndyStar regarding these plans. The purchase means that almost 20 years after the bigger and better Lucas Oil Stadium arose from the rubble of the original Hoosier
