Monday Memories: Grad’s hat made a handy slate for honoring mom
Graduates have been decorating mortarboards with messages and sculptures since at least the 1960s. According to an article on history.com, the tradition likely started with peace signs and slogans written on the hats, protesting the Vietnam War. It has since expanded to include witty sayings, artwork and personal messages. On the day before Mother’s Day, University of Toledo graduate Justin Hage thought it would be a great idea to pay tribute to his mother. In this 1998 Blade archive photo, he writes the message on his mortarboard in bold white marker, while Tina Hirauye watches. Hage later walked across the stage to accept his diploma for a degree in marketing.

Motherly love: Local chefs share dishes from their mom's kitchen
Everyone has that one favorite recipe their mom used to make — and when reminiscing on it — you can almost smell its aromas, remember the dish she always made it in, and see her handwriting on the recipe card. For me, it’s my mom’s house potatoes, and for Toledo-based chef Patrick Lahey, it’s his mom’s sauerkraut casserole. To supplement her family, his mother, Martha Lahey, would grow cabbages, make sauerkraut, and sell it during the Great Depression. “My mom always made sauerkraut with pork, baked apples, and potatoes, and when that was cooking, we could smell it,” the chef, who also serves as the owner of Stella’s Restaurant and Bar in Perrysburg, added. “I mean I could be getting off the school bus and smell it from outside. To this day, whenever I smell like sauerkraut cooking it certainly reminds me of my mother.”
