Low point ignited Perrysburg baseball’s run to Division I final four
Dave Hall has seen plenty of baseball with his teams at Perrysburg High School over 39 seasons as head coach of the Yellow Jackets, who will be making their third trip to the Division I state final four on Friday. He's seen the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly. For the most part — based on his 738-376 career record guiding the Jackets — there's been more good than bad, and rarely any ugly. Hall recalls the younger version of his coaching demeanor that could be a bit more feisty and demonstrative. In more recent years, he's been consistently more calm and analytic with his players.
Tough ace to solve: Perrysburg falls to Mason in Division I baseball state semifinals
AKRON — Perrysburg High School's bid for a Division I state baseball championship ended Friday night with a 1-0 loss to seventh-ranked Mason in a semifinal that featured a classic pitcher's duel at Canal Park in Akron. The Comets' hard-throwing, 6-foot-6, 225-pound right-hander, Jake Hanley, fired an 11-strikeout one-hitter to outduel Perrysburg's senior righty Matt Hubbard, who yielded one run on five hits and struck out 10 Mason batters. And, it was the Hanley — the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association's Division I player of the year and a likely Major League Baseball draft pick next month — who delivered the game's lone run with two outs in the top of seventh inning. After Hubbard had walked Mason lead-off hitter Alex Koelling with two outs, Hanely ripped a 1-2 pitch for a run-scoring double that one-hopped the wall in right field.
