Sunbury, Pa. — A Sunbury man was tased after he kicked a police officer while being taken into custody for a domestic incident.

Police responded the evening of May 7 to a report of a fight at a home on Masser Street. When officers arrived, they heard screaming coming from the home as Hector Rivera-Vazquez, 39, was attempting to leave. Police tried to detain Rivera-Vazquez, but he immediately started pulling away and swatting at their hands, according to the affidavit filed by Officer Aaron Doyle of Sunbury Police Department.

Three officers on the scene attempted to physically detain Rivera-Vazquez as he fought with them and shoved them. Police brought Rivera-Vazquez to the ground, but he continued to resist and kicked Officer Bremigen in the knee, according to the affidavit. At one point, Rivera-Vazquez attempted to grab one of the officer's weapons. Doyle tased Rivera-Vazquez three times, but it seemed to have little effect. After three minutes, police were finally able to put Rivera-Vazquez in handcuffs, Doyle wrote.

A child at the home told police Rivera-Vazquez had consumed half a bottle of brandy that night. Rivera-Vazquez began fighting with a woman at the home after he accused her of cheating. Rivera-Vazquez allegedly shoved one of the children who attempted to get in between him and the woman, according to the affidavit. The child then hit Rivera-Vazquez with a cell phone, causing him to bleed above the eyebrow.

Rivera-Vazquez was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, misdemeanor corruption of minors, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance, and summary harassment. District Judge Rachel Wiest-Benner set bail at 10% monetary for $50,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 14.
