Members of the Sun Prairie City Council’s Committee of the Whole approved a development agreement for the new Cabela’s store in Sun Prairie on Tuesday, April 8. It will be in the Prairie Lakes Retail Development on the city’s far west side.

The City of Sun Prairie will no longer be conducting curbside pick-ups of appliances. Residents can take them to the Recycle Center with a permit.

The Sun Prairie High School Forensics Team finished its season strong at the Wisconsin Forensic Coaches’ Association State Tournament on Saturday, March 29. The team placed second among 72 schools in the competition held at Ripon College. The Cardinals lost only to seven-tie defending state champion Madison Memorial.

Buena Vista Community School (BVCS) will be able to incorporate a high school elementary school mentorship program thanks in part to a “By Youth For Youth” grant. The grant was sponsored by United Way of Dane County, Dane County Youth Commission, City of Madison Community Development Division, and Oscar Meyer/Kraft Foods.

The Kohl’s Food Store, located at 926 Windsor Street in the Sundale Shopping Center, will close at 6 p.m. on April 24 for its final day in business.

Sun Prairie High School added a fourth name to its Wall of Success, Class of 1968’s Michael Lehman, the Chief Financial Officer for Sun Microsystems.

During Saturday’s community design forum at Prairie View Middle School, approximately 75 people produced a list of 10 issues that should be addressed in Sun Prairie in the future. They included senior services, affordable housing, downtown revitaliazation, historic preservation, traffic, schools and community facilities, recreation and culture, and more. Forum participants were free to discuss the issues at marked tables.

April 18, 1974

The school board has not yet arrived at an answer to the teachers’ rejection of their latest offer.

JoAnn Orfan has been named the new president of the City Council.

The police department and the city have reached a contract agreement.

A bowling ball which was dropped from the Bird Street overpass damaged a semi-trailer truck.

The high school chorus left for their trip to tour the Western United States in two large Greyhound buses.

Floyd and Bea Herreman recently celebrated 30 years in the restaurant business. They started business in what is now the front dining room of their present establishment (the building was destroyed in the 2018 natural gas explosion event). On April 1, 1944, they had 19 stools and five booths and specialized in hamburgers, a blue plate special and breakfasts. The couple fed the bands of Guy Lombardo and Harry James when they played at Angell Park. Hubert Humphrey and Robert Taft also ate there.

The Sun Prairie Service League is in the process of being organized.

Bette Wetmore and Dolores Virchow received “A” ratings at the Whitewater district forensic contest.

John Morschauser Jr. has leased the Shell Service Station at Jones and Main Streets. He was in the Army for 18 months and served 13 months in Tokyo.

The 1949 class play, One Mad Night, afforded the cast and audience a mutually good time.

100 Years Ago

April 17, 1924

Valedictorian at Sacred Hearts (two years of high school) is Miss Margaret Thomas. Miss Laura Voelker is the salutatorian.

Otto Riepel, a former resident here before moving to Milwaukee, has now moved to Racine, where he will operate a bowling alley in the new arcade.

Retail deliveries of Ford cars and trucks in the United States during the month of March reached the record-breaking total of 205,735.

In the Spring Prairie Lutheran Church at Keyester, the Easter morning service will be conducted in the Norweigian language with a special Easter service for the children in place of Sunday School. At the Lutheran Church here (Peace), the Easter morning service will be in the German language, and in the evening, the children and choirs will present an Easter program in English.

The soft drink place on the corner of Main and Center streets (Columbus Street in 2024) closed its doors Tuesday for at least a year. The closing was due to the Volstead Act (the 18th Amendment forbidding the sale of alcoholic beverages). A fine has been paid for the alleged offense and this carries with it the automatic revoking of the license to operate for one year.

April 13, 1899

Twenty packets of seeds will be given Free for your cash payment for a new or renewal order of The Countryman (newspaper) for one year at $1.25.

Wanted ads include one from Mrs. Fitch seeking two girls to learn dressmaking and one from Mrs. D.C. Angell seeking a girl for general housework.

The Volunteer Fire Department now has a membership of about 40 and at every meeting all are present. Their pay is small, and their work is good.

S.T. Burgess and W.S. Hidden are opening a new real estate company here.

The Drunasky boys have begun excavating for the new store building.
