Memphis 7-year-old killed, 4 injured in Alabama wreck
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 7-year-old from Memphis was killed in a car wreck that injured four others in Alabama, law enforcement officials say. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says around 3 p.m. Sunday, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by an Alabama woman hit a Hyundai Tucson driven by a Memphis woman on Interstate 22 west of Jasper.

Civil Rights District Groups Get Nearly $2.7M in Support From JeffCo Commission
The Jefferson County Commission today approved $2,691,642 in federal ARPA funding to organizations in the Civil Rights District to improve civil rights tourism. The $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill was enacted to speed the country’s recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jefferson County determined that tourism had been affected by the pandemic. After their applications were vetted by consulting firm Witt O’Brien, 16th Street Baptist Church, Urban Impact Inc., Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and historic Bethel Baptist Church in Collegeville were allotted funds for unique projects. Bill to impose mandatory prison for fentanyl in Alabama clears 1st hurdle
A bill to impose mandatory prison time for possessing one gram or more of pure fentanyl cleared its first hurdle today in the Alabama Legislature. The House Judiciary approved the bill by Rep. Matt Simpson, R-Daphne, which takes aim at the drug that caused overdose deaths on almost a daily basis in Jefferson County in 2021 and is connected to about 70,000 deaths a year in the United States, according to the Associated Press.

Some MAX bus routes in Jefferson County will be eliminated, and others altered, said representatives of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority on Wednesday. 42-year-old man killed in overnight shooting in western Birmingham
A man died early Tuesday following a shooting in western Birmingham. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Kenneth Earl Harris Jr. He was 42. Authorities said Harris was shot at 9:15 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of Buffalo Street. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m.
